Become a Contracted Mail Carrier

The United States Postal Service (USPS) hires independent contractors to help in all types of mail delivery, including air, rail and water, and highway deliveries. Contracts are bid on by interested providers and assigned based on the criteria set by the USPS. To get your name on the list of potential contractors follow these easy steps.

Instructions

Meet all eligibility requirements. Air, rail and water transportation require the appropriate means of transportation and are assigned based on an applicant's ability to provide the type of service needed. Highway contractors must meet more specific requirements, including being at least 21 years old and living or working in or next to the county you'll be serving.

Complete the PS Form 5436 Mailing List Application-Mail Transportation Services. This form asks for basic information such as name, address, and phone number, as well as details about the type of business you own, the type of equipment you use, and the type of route you're interested in.

Mail PS Form 5436 to your Area Distribution Network Office. Those interested in air, rail and water contracts should mail this form to the office located in Washington, D.C. If you're interested in a highway contract send the form to the nearest office. When the form is received your information will be entered in the USPS database and you'll be placed on a mailing list and notified when route opportunities become available in your area.
