Step 1
Look at the weave of Berber carpet. It's made of looped parallel lines, and the loops are tiny and packed densely together. This creates the classic Berber effect of low pile and "flat" carpet.
-
Step 2
Limit the wearing of shoes on Berber carpet within the first ten feet of the home entrance, unless you have a carpet runner in the garage. Nearly 80 percent of the dirt on carpets comes from shoes entering from outside.
-
Step 3
Vacuum regularly and use a vacuum cleaner with as much suction as possible. Remember Berber carpet loops are densely packed. The best care in vacuuming is to avoid a beater bar or rotating brush so the rows don't pull.
-
Step 4
Check the edges of Berber carpet regularly as part of the care regime. Carefully trim any strings of carpet as closely as possible. The strings can easily pull an entire row from the carpet.
-
Step 5
Look at manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and discuss cleaning with the store where you bought the Berber carpet. Most experts agree that while steam cleaning works well for Berber since so much of the liquid can be extracted, the best care is a dry cleaning method.
-
Step 6
Treat spills as soon as they occur. Berber tends to hold onto stains, so a policy of no food or drink might be the best way to go.
