Finding ways to recycle old floppy disks is fun and good for the environment. This floppy disk pen holder is a project for anyone who loves computers or recycled items. This project takes about one hour to complete. The most difficult part is drilling holes in the disks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Five 3 1/2 x 5 inch floppy disks
  • Drill with 5/32 drill bit
  • 1 piece of scrap wood
  • 16 zip ties
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Drill 2 holes on each side of four of the floppy disks. Protect your table or work area by using an old piece of wood to place the floppy disks on as you drill. There need to be 2 small holes in the top of the floppy disks on either side of the metal sliders. Place the hole on the top of the disks about 1 inch below the dent. Drill the bottom holes in the corner about 1/2 inch from the bottom of the disk.

  2. Step 2

Place two holes in each corner of the fifth floppy disk. This becomes the base of the pen and pencil holder.

  3. Step 3

Line the 4 floppy disks from Step 1 in a row, side by side. The metal sliders need to be positioned at the top of each disk.

  4. Step 4

Slide the zip ties through the holes to connect the disks together. This gives you a straight line of 4 disks. The zip ties need to be pulled tightly to hold them together.

  5. Step 5

Fold the sides around to make a box. Connect the last 2 sides together with the zip ties and pull tightly. Turn the box upside down so the metal slider is on the table. Place the floppy disk from Step 2 on the bottom and connect it to the sides of the box with zip ties through the holes. Cut the ends off of the zip ties with the scissors.
