How to Read a Dramatic Screenplay

Read a novel from beginning to end, and unless it is in another language, you will understand most of the plot lines and characters. However, you must learn to read a dramatic screenplay in a different way in order to get the whole picture.

Instructions

    • 1

De-code the acronyms. EXT means exterior, INT means interior and POV means point of view. Look up the meanings of every acronym you find in the screenplay in order to read it effectively.

    • 2

Understand the format. Professional screenplays do not include shot listings. There will be mainly just references to a cut or fade out. Also, slug lines are used to give the reader information about where the scene takes place, the time of the scene and whether or not the scene takes place inside or outside.

    • 3

Read a dramatic screenplay for content first. It may be difficult to skim a screenplay, but read it through once to get a grasp of who the characters are, where they are and what the main plot of the story is.

    • 4

Go through a dramatic screenplay a second time, and read it for nuances. A really good screenplay will use words and actions to portray a true to life conflict or struggle within the characters. A second read through will help you pick some of these out.

    • 5

Picture the characters firmly in your mind. Through action, dialogue and setting a good dramatic screenplay will develop the characters and bring them to life. Read the screenplay with these characters in your mind to help identify them and keep them straight.

    • 6

Enlist talented friends. When you are holding onto a screenplay that could be really great, but which needs some realism to bring it to life and help you make up your mind, lean on friends. Giving actors a chance to try and bring the screenplay to life, could help you decide if it is treasure or trash.
