Feeding a mule without getting bitten keeps all your extremities intact. It takes a wise rancher to know how to avoid such a calamity. Many stories have been told of such pains of being bitten because of one unwise move on the part of the feeder. Take precautions to not get bitten when feeding a mule by adhering to these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Feed your mule when he performs extra special tricks or behaves well, so it is truly a treat and reward.
Step2
Open your hand flat and place the carrot or apple in the center.
Step3
Move the hand with the treat toward the mule's shoulder.
Step4
Wait for the mule to step out of your space and take it with his lips. Keep your fingers out of the way.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many ranchers avoid feeding mules with their hands because of the stories they hear about those who lost a finger.
  • If you really want to give your mule a treat, place them in his feeder.
  • Pet or rub the mule to give him his treat. Affection and human contact does wonders for a mule.
  • You may establish a wonderful rapport with your mule. Then, perhaps you can be bold enough or trusting enough to feed him with your naked hand. But, still never put your guard down.
  • Most ranchers will tell you it is a bad habit to start feeding any equine with a bare hand. Sure, you see some give an apple or carrot, but it doesn't mean it's safe; it's trust between the owner and her mule.
