How to Tour Covered Bridges in Indiana

Experience an interesting part of the American heartland by touring covered bridge territory in Indiana. Indiana is home to nearly 100 authentic covered bridges still-standing which can be seen during an unforgettable road trip through the state. Follow the tips below for touring Indiana's covered bridges.

Instructions

1. Visit Parke County. This county is home to 31 of the bridges in addition to the breathtakingly beautiful Turkey Run State Park. This is located in the very Western part of the state, easily accessible from interstates 70 and 74 and not far from Indianapolis.

2. Take a guided tour. Instead of getting lost in an unknown area, sit back and relax while on a guided tour. Find them available at the Parke County visitor's bureau in Rockville.

3. Experience a festival. The Parke County Covered Bridge festival runs in the early fall over a weekend. There are color-coded routes to follow , and stops every few miles where you can find homemade treats like jams, folk arts and crafts and renovated historic buildings. There are other festivals throughout the state such as the Cumberland Covered Bridge Festival.

4. Take a drive and see the bridges of Putnam County. Putnam County is home to 9 standing covered bridges. Plan the itinerary, find a hotel and see images of bridges you will see by visiting the Putnam County Visitor and Convention Bureau's website (see Resources below).

5. See some of the bridges in the Eastern part of the state. Fayette County bordering Ohio is home to 4 covered bridges, while Rush county has six. They are both easily accessible from interstates 70 and 74 as well.

6. Stay close to Indianapolis, and still see the beautiful rustic sites of authentic covered bridges. There is 1 located not far outside the city at the D.W. Brown Farm. There are 2 more located just a few miles north of the City in Hamilton County.
