How to Stitch a Twisted Lattice Band

Create a border for your cross-stitch with a twisted lattice band. This thick and attractive band can also be used as filler for large areas. Use the twisted lattice band stitch for added decoration by using decorative knots of metallic thread within the stitches. Follow the steps below for doing the twisted lattice band stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by placing a series of herringbone stitches from left to right. These are done by bringing the needle out on the left-hand side of the line to be worked, making a small stitch on the upper line which points to the left, keeping the thread below the needle and pulling it through the fabric. The finished stitches will be interlocking X-shaped stitches.

    • 2

Stitch a row of double herringbone stitches. These stitches are done in the same way, but placed in between the first stitches and interlaced throughout them. Leave these stitched loose to allow for them to be further interlaced with the twisted lattice band stitch.

    • 3

Lace the herringbone stitches to create the twisted lattice band. Begin on the bottom portion of the herringbone stitches, pushing the needle underneath the herringbone stitches from bottom to top, in an upward motion. Lace around the stitches only, not grabbing any fabric.

    • 4

Finish the twisted lattice band by lacing the top portions of the herringbone stitches. The thread used for the twisted lattice band can be a contrasting color or weight to that of the herringbone stitches.
