Step 1
Diversify. It is pretty common for guitarists now to have influences from several genres, but when Navarro joined Jane's Addiction in the 80s after playing speed metal, the transition was rare. His broad range of styles gave life to much of Jane's Addiction early work, so playing like Navarro doesn't mean just playing alternative rock. You need to be able to infuse all styles of guitar playing into different styles of music.

Step 2
Listen to some of Dave Navarro's influences. Navarro was inspired to begin playing guitar by Jimi Hendrix, so Hendrix is a great place to start. Jimmy Page and Robert Smith of the Cure are a few others you should listen to for inspiration. Navarro's style is an infusion of metal, psychedelic rock and modern rock, so pick your favorite artists from those genres and practice along with them.

Step 3
Pick your era of Dave Navarro's musical career that you want to work on. Navarro has played in different styles, so start with one band or era and work to the others. For a more alternative and punk rock style, try Navarro's early work with Jane's Addiction. Work on the Red Hot Chili Pepper's album "One Hot Minute" for some rock and funk work. Try some of Navarro's more recent work with The Panic Channel for a more straight up rock feel.

Step 4
Experiment. One of the things that Navarro is really good at is experimentation. Try layering and texturing. Don't get into the mindset that the guitar has to be front and center all the time. Navarro is good at shining when it's time for him to shine, but he also adds quality musical content when he isn't the star.

Step 5
Equip yourself like Dave. Navarro has a signature guitar by Paul Reed Smith that he uses most often, so consider picking one up if you really want to go for the Navarro sound. Navarro uses Marshall JCM900s for amplification. He also uses a Vox AC30 for cleaner sounds. As for effects pedals, Navarro uses mostly Boss pedals, with a Vox Cry Baby Wah pedal and some others mixed in.
