Jimmy Page's illustrious music career began as the guitarist of The Yardbirds and continued when he founded one of the most influential and well know bands in rock and roll history, Led Zepplin. Jimmy Page's style is both technically and emotionally superb. While impossible to copy, there are some things that can help you play more like Jimmy Page.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice your strumming. Jimmy Page has some amazing solos and lead parts, but he is also one of the greatest rhythm guitarists who has ever lived. Because of this, you need to be able to do some mean strumming to play like Page. You need to be able to strum with dynamics, mix in accenting single notes and chords and even learn to skip some strums.

  2. Step 2

Unplug and go acoustic. Another thing that Jimmy Page excelled at was playing acoustic. While it may not seem very rock and roll, there is a lot you can learn in Page's style from playing acoustic guitar. Listen to "Over the Hills and Far Away" and practice your acoustic strumming as well as electric technique.

  3. Step 3

Work on hammer-ons. Jimmy Page perfected his hammer-on technique so that he could play fluidly without having to increase his picking speed. Spend some time playing scales and riffs with only your left hand (or right hand if you're left-handed). Hammer-ons are a staple of rock and roll guitar playing, so it is an important technique to master.

  4. Step 4

Write your own music. If you want to play like Jimmy Page without necessarily sounding like Jimmy Page, work on writing your own music instead of just copying other people's music. Page is known for playing with incredible emotion and part of that comes from playing his own music. There is more feeling to your playing if you are emotionally vested so try writing your own melody lines and chord structures.

  5. Step 5

Try out some of Jimmy's gear. Page was known for using Gibson Les Pauls, although he did throw in the occasional SG and sometimes a Fender Telecaster. He used Martin acoustic guitars. Page also used a Supro amplifier for recording and Marshall cabs for live performances. As for effects, some that Page used are a Vox Cry Baby wah pedal, a fuzz pedal and a tonebender.
