How to Buy Raku Pottery
The crackled, iridescent surface of Raku pottery is what makes it so beautiful. The process of creating Raku involves extremely high temperatures in a special kiln followed by freezing to create spontaneous, colorful patterns. As a result, no two pieces of Raku are alike. Here's how to buy Raku pottery.

1
Visit art shows, galleries and studios to browse Raku pottery. You'll find everything from bowls to vases to sculptures. It's common for one artist to use the same mold for dozens of pieces-which all will look very different due to the process of Raku kilning. Decide what shapes, colors and textures appeal to you the most.

2
Ask the artist questions about their Raku process. Most artists will have different equipment, firing styles and glazes. Be sure to ask whether you can count on the glaze staying the same color over time. Matte copper glazes that are high in copper carbonate are more likely to change hues over time, which may or may not be a desired metamorphosis for you.

Smell the Raku pottery. Depending on the firing process used, some Raku can have a smoky scent. If you smell smoke and don't want to bring a strong smell into your home, you might want to reconsider buying the pottery since other artists use a process that reduces the odor of Raku.

4
Check the Raku pottery for signs of scarring before you purchase it. Some people like the distressed look caused by scar marks made after the piece came out of the kiln, but others like a smoother appearance. Make sure you are happy with the texture of the Raku piece, including any scars, before buying it.

5
Ask to have your Raku pottery packed very carefully after you buy it. Raku is extremely fragile, so transport it with care and keep away from small, curious children and clumsy pets who could knock it over and shatter it to pieces with the swish of a fluffy tail.
