Visit China Town if you live near one or plan to be vacationing close to a China Town in the near future. Many major U.S. cities have a neighborhood populated primarily by Asian Americans. These neighborhoods are the best places to find Chinese umbrellas, as well as other Asian imports-and of course Chinese restaurants.

Visit Asian gift shops to get an in-person look at Chinese umbrellas. Many malls have Asian shops where you can buy futons, sushi kits, kimonos and Chinese umbrellas. Check the directories of the malls nearest you to see if there is an Asian gift shop within driving distance.

Shop online. Some websites have a large selection of paper Chinese umbrellas (see Resources below). You can also find Chinese umbrellas in a variety of colors and fabrics on eBay.

Consider buying Japanese umbrellas while you're shopping. Chinese umbrellas traditionally are made from paper or cloth and bamboo and usually are mass-manufactured, but Japanese umbrellas often are handmade for better quality while capturing the same decorating effect as a Chinese umbrella.
