Hypnosis is best described as an altered state of consciousness. It helps you rid yourself of certain behaviors, like smoking and over-eating. It also proves very successful in helping treat insomnia. Worry, anxiety and concerns are usually the culprit behind insomnia. This prevents you from falling into a deep sleep, also called an alpha state.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look closely at the hypnotherapist's qualifications. Certified hypnotherapists typically complete 200 hours of training. But some other health care professionals, like psychologists, may be trained in hypnosis. Ask a friend for recommendations.

  2. Step 2

Ask questions. Just like you would with any health care professional, ask about the hypnotherapist's credentials. Find out how many hours of training they have and if they work with other patients dealing with insomnia.

  3. Step 3

Set an appointment. The hypnotherapist will use techniques to rid your subconscious from all the worries, anxieties and thoughts that keep you awake at night.

  4. Step 4

Buy a CD. This is another option to attending an actual session. There are hypnosis CDs that are specifically designed to put your mind at ease and allow your subconscious to sleep deeply. They promise you'll sleep deeply and wake up energized.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep seeing hypnotherapists until you find one you're comfortable with. There's nothing wrong with shopping around for the best one. Just because you have one meeting with a hypnotherapist doesn't mean you can't go to a different person the following week.
  • Be realistic about your treatment schedule. Discuss the timeline with your hypnotherapist. Ask how long they think it will take for you to get a good night's sleep.
