Step 1
Choose a school that is right for you. Different trade schools excel in different areas. Choose a school that offers a program that matches your interests.
-
Step 2
Attend orientation. Orientation offers students who have never visited the campus a wealth of information. Orientation generally includes a tour of the school and an explanation of the services the school has to offer, such as career development, tutoring services and library privileges.
-
Step 3
Attend classes. The urge to skip classes is sometimes hard to shake, especially in the post-secondary education environment where structure is more lax and instructors do not always take attendance. While many schools have attendance requirements, skipping class habitually is one of the leading factors in poor performance and failure.
-
Step 4
Keep up on reading and class projects. It is easy to fall behind in your studies when you are not routinely required to recite information or when you are tested on it infrequently, which is common in post-secondary environments. Studies show that cramming at the last minute for a midterm does not yield the same results as preparing oneself throughout the quarter or semester continuously in a structured, orderly fashion.
-
Step 5
Seek assistance in areas of difficulty before it is too late. Identify when you are having problems with a subject and seek the assistance of the instructor or a tutor. Waiting until the last minute to solve a problem that has been building in intensity for weeks often yields poor results.
-
Step 6
Use the resources that your institution has to offer. Most institutions offer tutoring, career services, job placement and library services. There are support services that are intended to compliment your education. Take advantage of them.
