How to Make a No Sew Pirate Costume

Choosing holiday costumes is exciting for both children and adults. Some people want to be hands-on and create a costume of their own. Making a no-sew pirate costume is a wonderful idea for those who aren't handy with needle and thread or for those who want to look like the most unique matey on the ship.

• Tulle
• Elastic hairband
• Pirate patch
• Scissors
• Dressy blouse

1. Visit your local fabric shop and buy 3 to 4 yards of tulle to create your no-sew pirate costume. To create a pirate look, consider using dark colors such as red and black. You may even want to buy some tulle with skeletons as the design. Consider using red or black velvet crushed material as well.

2. Buy a black pirate eye patch at your local dollar or crafts store.

3. Find a skinny elastic headband to make the waistband of the no-sew pirate skirt for the costume. Use a color that blends nicely with the tulle.

4. Cut the tulle carefully into strips that are just about 3-inches thick. You want the strips to be just about 3-feet in length to create the no-sew pirate costume for a young child.

5. Begin cutting the strips and knot the strips around the elastic headband. To do this, place the 2-foot length strip around the elastic headband so that it's halved. Begin to tie the tulle so that the knot around the headband creates 2 floating pieces of the no-sew skirt. Repeat this until the strips are all around the elastic headband. The pirate skirt should be full and flowing.

6. Put a flowing black top on to compliment the no-sew pirate skirt. The dressy top should look like a pirate shirt, perhaps with holes or one that is ragged on the edges.

7. Use a piece of leftover tulle to create a pirate bandana.

8. Dress up the young child in the pirate top, no-sew pirate skirt and pirate eye patch. He or she will look like the meanest pirate on the ship.
