    • 2

Speak to German teachers and instructors. Ask what students need to know in the different grades from K to 12. Find out what causes difficulties for students. Know the needs of the students so that you can better assist them.

    • 3

Develop an assessment so you can find a starting point for your students. Ask questions and have them fill out mini tests the first time you meet. Explain that you want to teach them what they need to know so you are determining what they lack.

    • 4

Find German resources from beginner to advanced levels. Check German stores or ask teachers to suggest material for you to use. Make your own material. Create flash cards and hands-on material for students.

    • 5

Make it fun. Play games with German flash cards or with the computer. Listen to German compact discs with speaking and music included. You want students to enjoy working with you and not dread the lessons.

    • 6

Get your name into local schools so teachers can refer students to you. Make flyers listing your expertise and hours. Include rates or just put a contact number on the flyer and answer questions about rates when potential students call you.

    • 7

Write a resume and cover letter outlining your skills and experience. Show potential students when you meet. Let them know that you have the knowledge and the ability to help them learn German.

Tips & Warnings

  • Continually review your lessons with students. You don't want to teach new material if they keep forgetting the basics.
