Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that the basic Chinese zodiac is based on birth years, not months as in the Western zodiac. The Chinese zodiac repeats every 12 years.

  2. Step 2

Memorize all 12 Chinese zodiac animal signs and the years associated with them. The zodiac animal of the year you were born under greatly influences your life. The twelve signs are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Learn the characteristics of each zodiac animal.

  3. Step 3

Find your inner animal. The 12 inner animals come from your birth month. They represent what you wish you could be. This helps determine your compatibility with the other animals.

  4. Step 4

Discover the secret animal that comes from your birth hour. It represents who you are, but don't want anyone else to know. The secret animals define your truest representation.

  5. Step 5

Recognize the 4 trines. The trines are groupings of certain zodiac signs with similar zodiac signs. Your grouping is determined by the year of your birth. Learn the strengths, weaknesses and compatibility of the trine signs.

  6. Step 6

Explore the 5 elements that make up the universe. Each zodiac animal has the five elements creating 60 different combinations. For example, for the snake, there is the wood snake, the fire snake, the water snake, the earth snake and the metal snake. Each is different, so even people born under the same sign differ greatly from one another.

Tips & Warnings
  • In calculating your Chinese zodiac sign, remember that the Chinese year is based on the lunar calendar and begins sometime in late January or early February. If your birthday fell between January 1 and the date of the Chinese New Year, your Chinese birth year is the previous year.
