How to Study the I Ching Oracle

The I Ching is an ancient Chinese philosophical text, sometimes called the "Book of Changes." It centers on the balance of opposites, evolution of events, and change. Westerners usually regard it only as a system of divination, but it also expresses ancient Chinese culture. Follow these steps to study the I Ching oracle.

1. Research online to find methods to study the I Ching oracle. There are books, CDs or online courses available.

2. Know that the I Ching isn't for fortune telling. It can't foresee future events, only future changes and affects.

3. Realize the I Ching oracle reading is made up of hexagrams, or series of lines. The lines combine into different combinations or hexagrams and can create up to 4,096 possible readings.

4. Find a psychic who specializes in I Ching readings by researching online or in your telephone directory. Or, find an online website that gives I Ching readings. The online readings are supposed to be as accurate and effective if used correctly.

5. Study the I Ching with a clear mind, reverence and respect. If you are frivolous in your approach, you won't get the answers you need and may even be chastised by the oracle.

6. Ponder your question before asking the I Ching. Focus on what you can learn from future events and how they will affect you. Don't ask questions about the outcome of future events.

7. Cast the oracle by using either the yarrow stick or coin method. The coin method is the most common. If you're using a computer, simply type in your question. Concentrate on your question while throwing the coins or sticks or clicking the "Go" button on your computer.
