The practical and spiritual importance of choosing a God (or Gods) has burdened humanity since the dawn of human consciousness. Following the last half-century of communication between different cultures, religions and societies, choosing the right God (or Gods) for you has never been easier. So, if you need some religion in your life, here are a few steps to get you started on your path to God.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Decide how many Gods you believe in; most modern religions are monotheistic and believe that there is only one God who created everything and will one day destroy everything. Ancient polytheistic religions believe in many Gods, each with its own distinctive traits and powers.
Step2
Consider the nature of existence and the universe. Different religions hold different views on the universe, from the earth centric to the pan-dimensional multi verse.
Step3
Try to decide what sort of after-life you feel exists. Spiritual belief the world over holds the after-life in extreme importance. After-lives vary from absolute nothingness, a good place for good people with a bad place for bad people, or even reincarnation--rebirth right back here on earth.
Step4
Study the doctrines of the different religions that have the right number of Gods and the right esoteric belief structure for your taste. Find one that has a morality similar to your own or that you aspire to.
Step5
Find churches in your area that worship the God (or Gods) that you decided was your best choice and experience their rituals and ceremonies. Consider these rituals to see if they fulfill your needs for a symbolic spiritual journey.
Step6
Keep an open mind as you tread on your path to your own personal God (or Gods). Pay attention to the world around you; once God knows you are looking, chances are that he, she or they will give you some hints about which way to go.

Tips & Warnings

  • The folks at Belief Net have set-up a cool website for those seeking a religion (see Resources below). The site is a multiple choice questionnaire that takes you through the important spiritual questions you must answer to find your own religion or belief structure.
  • Be wary of people who claim to have personal knowledge of God (or Gods) or people who want you to believe that they are a mouthpiece to God. These people are often profiteers and can end up steering you away from God even if they are good intended.
