How to Attend a Marriage Preparation Class

Getting married is one of the biggest life commitments a person can make. Unfortunately, about half of marriages end in divorce. Before taking vows some couples attend a marriage preparation class. Certain religions such as Catholics have a mandatory marriage preparation class if they want to be married in the church. A marriage preparation class can help a couple learn how to work through differences, compromise, and communicate more effectively--all of which help a marriage stay strong.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a class. If you are affiliated with a specific religion ask your minister or priest for information on a marriage preparation class. Some classes may be held over a series of a few weeks. Be sure a class fits into your and your partner's schedule to ensure you will attend every class.

    • 2

Decide what areas you want to work on as a couple. Even the best relationships may have areas of conflict. Talk with your significant other to determine what areas in your relationship cause tension or disagreements. Identifying areas of conflict together will help you both work on solutions.

    • 3

Clear your mind of distractions. Forget about everyday stresses such as work and wedding planning. To get the most benefit from the marriage preparation class, focus on what the instructors are saying without thinking about other things.

    • 4

Do all exercises. Most marriage preparation classes will include exercises where couples will talk or write to each other. Certain areas of a relationship may be focused on. Even if you think an exercise is silly or will not help you as a couple, do it anyway. You may be surprised to gain a little insight into your relationship or partner.

    • 5

Be honest. Keep in mind the class is to teach you ways to work out differences and communicate effectively. You need to be honest when talking with your fiancée. Issues cannot be resolved if someone withholds the truth.

    • 6

Keep a journal. As the years pass by in your marriage you may forget skills and tips you learned in the marriage preparation class. By keeping a journal it will allow you to refer back to it, even years later.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't blame your partner. Conflicts may arise as discussions continue in the marriage preparation class. Keep in mind you should work together to find a solution.
