How to Grow a Scotch Broom Shrub

Cytisus scoparius, better known as scotch broom, is a deciduous shrub native to Europe that is commonly found in the United States. In coastal California, scotch broom was planted to help control beach erosion.

Instructions

1. Choose a sunny spot for your scotch broom plant. Know your soil type. Scotch broom grows well in a soil pH of 4-5 to 7.5. The shrub likes dry, sandy soil, which is one of the reasons it has adapted well to coastal California.

2. Expect the scotch broom to grow to a height of 4 to 6 feet, so plant the perennial as a backdrop to smaller plants.

3. Water regularly, but don't water excessively.

4. Plan for the scotch broom to bloom in late spring or early summer, between Match and May.

5. Read the notes posted on websites, such as Dave's Garden, from different gardeners around the country. Many gardeners debate whether to even plant the scotch broom because of its invasive nature. There are other issues to consider, as well. All parts of the scotch broom shrub are poisonous, so you must protect your children and pets from the plant. You should wear gardening gloves when handling scotch broom, as it can irritate skin and cause allergic reactions. The plant is flammable and can contribute to brush fires.
