How to Get a Community Development Block Grant

The Community Development Block Grant program is the longest running program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Use these steps to learn more about community development block grants and how to get one for your community.

Instructions

1. Go the source. Visit the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) portion of the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development website. Learn what the organization expects from your proposal. Enroll in the CDBG training, which reviews the elements of the program.

2. Be specific. After taking the training, you and your planning committee should outline in detail the funds you need and the projects you intend to administer.

3. Assemble a great application packet. This should include the required documents from the CDBG program (Consolidated Plan), and your grant proposal. If you're not confident that you can compose a strong proposal, hire a grant writing professional.

4. Diversify. Under the CDBG program, there are seven different grant programs. Research each of them, including state level grants, to fully explore all of your options. Research community development block grants apart from HUD funding.
