How to Use Clay Cookware

Cooking in clay cookware produces meals that are tasty, moist and delicious. This cooking method will allow your food to retain its natural flavor and nutrients, and does not require the addition of fats or much additional liquid. Instructions

      Submerge both the top and bottom of your clay cooking pot in water.

      Leave the pot soaking for 15 minutes.

      Pour the water out of the clay pot.

      Add the ingredients of your meal into the pot and put on the cover.

      Place the covered pot in the center of a cold oven. Do not preheat the oven when using a clay pot as it can crack. Check the recipe to see if the cover needs to be removed near the end of the cooking time to crisp or brown the food.

      Follow the recipe for the correct temperature of the oven setting. Most recipes using a clay pot cook at temperatures between 400 - 480 degrees F.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clay cooking pots are unglazed on both the inside and the outside. Terra cotta pots are glazed on the inside and unglazed on the outside.

  • Never use a clay pot on the stove top without using a heat diffuser.

  • Be aware that a clay cooking pot can crack because of sudden temperature changes.

  • Never put a hot clay pot onto a cold metal trivet, or the pot bottom may crack. Place it on a hot towel or pad.
