Death can be painful, but it can also be the start of a celebration that commemorates the memory of the deceased. Celebratory funerals help us to cope with our loss while getting us in touch with the value of a life well lived.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Include everyone in the planning. You want the celebration to express the emotions and needs of each family member. Let everyone contribute ideas and share in their implementation.
Step2
Erect a memory wall and have each member of the family bring a copy of their favorite picture of the deceased loved one. Pin them on a wall covered in paper and write messages to the lost loved one.
Step3
Play soft music and offer food. This could be anything from a fully catered event to a few homemade finger foods. As long as people are having a good time and sharing memories of the deceased, it will be perfect. Include dishes and songs the deceased enjoyed.
Step4
Allow for a moment of silence to honor the deceased. Maintain a party atmosphere but put aside this moment to remember why you are there.
Step5
Ask people to make brief speeches, much as you would at a wedding. They can recount their dearest memories. Encourage them to share funny stories as well as moving remembrances. These speeches can take the place of the more traditional eulogy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Invite the children. A celebratory funeral gives them the opportunity to play, interact and participate in the festivities.
