Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn the proper stretches associated with Ashtanga yoga. Work with an experienced instructor or watch a video to help you perfect the moves for your specific fitness and flexibility level.

  2. Step 2

Study the basic principles behind Ashtanga yoga practice and realize it is not simply a great way to get rock hard abs. Know that Asht means eight and represents the eight principles of Ashtanga practice.

  3. Step 3

Memorize the principles, and keep them in mind when doing Ashtanga: yama (control), niyama (conduct), asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (withdrawal of sensory perceptions), dharama (concentration), dhyana (uninterrupted meditation), and samadhi (complete equilibrium). Try looking into the concept of chakras and the history of the yoga arts to help aide in your discovery.

  4. Step 4

Concentrate heavily on your breathing while doing the asanas (postures), complete your breaths totally and breathe easy throughout the routine. Maintain a concentrated focus throughout your routine to help aid in the constant meditative process.

  5. Step 5

Perform visualizations if you are prone to anxiety and worry and find quieting the mind difficult. Modify your diet to reflect your healthy lifestyle. Eliminating processed foods and eating earlier in the day can help with cleansing. Wake up and go to sleep earlier. Some yogis practice getting up with the sun and going to bed as it sets.

  6. Step 6

Practice meditation fully and totally without interruption. Perform meditation exercises regularly to learn how to center and cleanse your mind and spirit.
