Ashtanga Yoga synchronizes the breath with a series of poses that produces internal heat and a detoxifying perspiration. This internal cleansing helps to detoxify muscles and internal organs. It also aids circulation, contributes to physical strength and calms the mind. Practicing Ashtanga Yoga helps make you aware of the six poisons in life: kama (desire), krodha (anger), moha (delusion), lobha (greed), matsarya (sloth) and mada (envy).

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Adopt nonviolent values. With yama, you should practice honesty, generosity and minimalism. Focus on good behavior and values.

  2. Step 2

Become free of negativity and rid yourself of preoccupation with your physical state. To practice niyama, you should seek contentment and rid yourself of impurities in your mind and body. Increase your intellect. Take control of your life.

  3. Step 3

Prepare your body for meditation by learning the correct body posture or asana. Sitting in meditation requires a disciplined body.

  4. Step 4

Control your breath, which is called pranayama. Inhale, retain and exhale in a rhythmic pattern of slow, deep breaths. Concentrating on your breathing patterns limits distractions while you're meditating. Also, learn to withdraw your mind (pratyahara). This enables you to focus so distractions are not an issue during meditation.

  5. Step 5

Concentrate on an object to train your mind to remain focused on one point. This is called dharana.

  6. Step 6

Try uninterrupted meditation without a focal point. This is called dhyana, and you use it to create an acute awareness on your oneness with the universe.

  7. Step 7

Merge into a state of bliss. Samadhi is when you discover the real truth of who you are.
