MSN's latest version of its IM program, Windows Live Messenger, has many keyboard shortcuts that can be used from the main Messenger window. Outlined below are the most widely used shortcut keys for this instant messaging program.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open a new conversation window to IM one of your Messenger contacts. A conversation window is the window in which you and a contact exchange instant messages. To begin a new IM conversation, click on a name in your contact list, located in the main Messenger window. Press "Enter" and a new conversation window will appear.

  2. Step 2

Jump to a specific contact by using the first letter of a name. If you don't want to scroll through your list, click on anyone in the list in the main Messenger window. Click the first letter of the name of your contact. You will be taken directly to all contacts listed under that letter.

  3. Step 3

Delete or block a current contact. If you want to prohibit a contact from seeing when you are using Windows Live Messenger, or if a contact no longer uses this program, go to the main Messenger window. Click on the contact's name and press the "Delete" key. The contact will no longer be on your list and won't know when you are signed into Messenger.

  4. Step 4

Add a contact to your Messenger contact list. From the main Messenger window, press the "Alt" key while pressing the "C" key. You will note at the top of the window that a dropdown menu appears and "Add a Contact" is highlighted. Press the "Enter" key to open a new window in which you can add a contact.

  5. Step 5

Email a contact from your contact list. In the main Messenger window, click on the contact. Simultaneously press the "Alt" key and the "M" key. A new, blank email message will appear addressed to your contact. Type in your message and click "Send."

  6. Step 6

Use Windows Live Help. Press the "F1" key while you're in the main Messenger window to open the Help window. You can also open the Help menu by pressing the "Alt" key while simultaneously pressing the "H" key (also from the main Messenger window). After the menu opens, click on the Help feature.
