Organization-based fellowships allow you to work for a particular organization for 1 to 2 years. These fellowships offer an excellent opportunity to receive training and to learn more about an organization. Follow these steps to get information on these fellowships.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Identify some organizations whose mission is important to you. Surf the Web or research at your local library. A research librarian can direct you to the right reference books. Try to identify 3 to 5 organizations that you might be interested in working for.

  2. Step 2

Contact the organizations and find out if they offer a fellowship in your area of expertise. Get any details about requirements, application procedures and deadlines.

  3. Step 3

Visit your college career office. Many organizations send announcements about fellowships to Career Services.

  4. Step 4

Search the Internet for fellowships. There are sites for all different specialties. If you are a recent law school graduate, PS LawNet is a good choice. The American Civil Liberties Union offers a number of fellowships as well. If your field is medicine, try the American Association for Cancer Research.

Tips & Warnings
  • A fellowship generally offers you 1 or 2 years of employment at an organization, but this is no guarantee that a staff position will be available when the fellowship is complete.
