Many science classes, especially chemistry classes, start by teaching the basics of an atom. Studying the structure of the atom is hard because you can't see it with the unaided eye. However, scientists can make a model based upon experiments. Here's how you can make your own atom model.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy craft foam balls. The atom needs a nucleus, protons and neutrons inside the nucleus and electrons that orbit the nucleus. Use craft foam balls for each of these.

  2. Step 2

Start building a base for the atom model. The base should be sturdy. Use an 8-inch square wooden block.

  3. Step 3

Drill a hole into the wooden base and glue a wooden rod. Allow it to dry completely before continuing to add atom parts to it.

  4. Step 4

Build the nucleus. Make part of the nucleus open to show what's inside. Cut the foam ball in half. Attach the nucleus to the wooden rod. Let it dry.

  5. Step 5

Add other parts of the atom. Add smaller foam balls to the foam ball nucleus for protons and neutrons. Paint each smaller foam ball a different color for easy identification.

  6. Step 6

Put electrons orbiting around the nucleus. Use strong wire and make an orbit around the nucleus. Attach the stiff wire to the base and slide on the foam ball chosen for the electron.

  7. Step 7

Label the parts of the atom. Write a report for the job functions of each part of an atom.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a specific element to represent. Elements that have fewer particles such as electrons and protons are easier to model than a heavier elements with many particles.
