Spear fishing combines two ports: that of snorkling and fishing. It is perhaps one of the most demanding sports, for not only does the spear fisherman swim underwater in search of fish, he must use a gun firing a spear to do so. Do you want to get started?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which kind of spear gun you wish to have: those powered by compressed air or by rubber bands.

  2. Step 2

Examine the compressed air spear gun. This spear gun works much the same as an air rifle and is easy to operate underwater. It is also very accurate.

  3. Step 3

Explore the benefits of the rubber powered spear gun. This gun requires a fair bit of strength to load, but it is the type of gun preferred by many experienced spear fishermen.

  4. Step 4

Read the "Blue Water Hunter" books by Carlos Eyles. They are the ultimate books about spear fishing and should be read by any aspiring spear fisherman.

  5. Step 5

Join spear fishing forums like those at Spear Fishing World. There you can ask questions about spear guns and find out what others prefer.

  6. Step 6

Compare different spear guns online for reviews and prices.

  7. Step 7

Go to local sports equipment stores to see what they offer for spear fishing. There you will be able to get some idea of the weight and how they feel in your hands.

  8. Step 8

Check out diving supply stores. You will be able to find people there who are passionate about diving and spear fishing. Be sure to ask a lot of questions.

  9. Step 9

Look in the classifieds or in publications like Uncle Henry for spear guns. Once you've done your research, you should be able to find the gun of your choice at a reasonable price.

  10. Step 10

See what eBay or other online stores have to offer.
