1
Decide what type of silk you want for the garment you are sewing. Silk comes in many different weaves and styles and they vary greatly in price. You can purchase dupioni, a silk with slubs, or woven bumps in the fabric. Shantung, another form of silk, also contains slubs, but fewer than dupioni.

2
Buy a pattern. Determine exactly how much fabric you will need based on size. Silk is usually expensive so be exact in your measurements.

3
Shop around. Fabric stores are great or you might want to try shopping online.

4
Choose online fabrics with care. Because you cannot touch the fabric, you'll want to watch out for details. Keep in mind that the camera that was used, the lighting or your computer monitor can distort the color of the fabric. Some online stores will send you a swatch of fabric before you buy.

Tips & Warnings
Buyer beware! If you are purchasing fabric online and the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Steer clear of fiber silk, which is really 100% polyester. However, you might want to choose a silk fabric that is blended with polyester, acetate, rayon or cotton. Go to a fabric store and learn what you can about the different types of silk.
