A toilet can be wonderful until it doesn't work. And then, it can become a household nightmare. Never fear: eHow can help. One repair you can do is replace the toilet's overflow tube. Read on to learn more.

From Quick Guide: Unclog a Toilet
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn the water supply off for the toilet. You will find the knob for the water supply near the back of the toilet. Twist the knob in a clockwise direction. Once you have turned off the water supply, flush the toilet to drain the water from the tank. Sop up any remaining water inside the tank with a towel.

  2. Step 2

Use a large wrench to undo the 2 inch bolt at the bottom of the tank for the flush valve assembly. You can loosen the bolt the rest of the way with your fingers.

  3. Step 3

Lift the tank from the toilet bowl.

  4. Step 4

Replace the plastic outlet ring, the washer and the overflow tube. Finger tighten it first, then use your pliers. It should just unscrew from its mounting point. Be careful not to over tighten. Also replace the flush valve to tank and tank to bowl gaskets.

  5. Step 5

Use a new overflow tube to replace the faulty overflow tube. You can find these at a hardware store of at online stores. You will place it in the toilet in the same manner you removed it. Slip it into position gently so it fits snugly, but is not damaged.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the process in reverse for reassembling the toilet. Place the hose back to the underside of the tank and start the bolt with your fingers then tighten it the rest of the way with a wrench. Turn back on the water supply and let the tank refill. Be careful to turn the water supply on slowly as you could end up spraying yourself if the water pressure is too high.
