How to Live the Retirement Dream

Since you began your career, you've been working towards retirement. Now that it's closing in, you likely have specific ideas in mind about how your retirement will be. You can live the retirement dream, but it's up to you to make it happen.

Instructions

Find the right place to live. Where you live in retirement is about more than a great neighborhood in a fair climate. You also need to consider the cost of your home. You'll be better able to live your retirement dream if you're not overextended in your mortgage.

Plan for the future value of your money. As the years go by and retirement gets closer, inflation also kicks in. You'll be better prepared for retirement when you factor this in.

    • 3

Invest along the way. As soon as you start your first job, it's a good time to invest towards your retirement. And even though you may switch jobs, you shouldn't cash out your accounts. Let them do their job over the years and you'll be able to quit your job and retire.

Quit your job. You might love to work, but that schedule sure could get in the way of your retirement plans. Find a part time job if you want to, but leave the majority of your time available to enjoy life.

    • 5

Love your kids, but not too much. It's easy as parents to spend money bailing your kids out of situations they've gotten themselves into. But you need to make sure you keep enough money set aside for yourself.

    • 6

Prepare for health concerns. As you age, you could spend more time in the doctor's office. It's important that you account for this expense so you won't be caught off guard.

    • 7

Have a benefits backup. It's nice to think that since you're a retiree you'll be taken care of by your company. But unfortunately that might change, and you could find yourself without benefits. But when you have a backup plan, there's no need to worry.

Live on one income. At one time or another, you may find yourself without your spouse. This is a tough emotional transition, but it doesn't have to be hard financially. Death is inevitable and it's smart for everyone to be prepared.
