The Internet is in our homes and we use it in our everyday life. And while it offers a number of conveniences, it also poses a cybersecurity risk. But you can protect yourself from criminals that are online. These are tips that everyone who uses the Internet should know.

From Quick Guide: Email Safety
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose the right passwords. Because they're easy to remember, people usually pick something simple. But the better option is to make your password complex, then work to memorize it. The best passwords contain numbers and letters. The letters should be uppercase and lowercase. One of the worst passwords is the last four digits of your social security number. If hackers get that, they might also be able to access your personal financial information.

  2. Step 2

Protect your passwords. Keep your password to yourself. If you get emails requesting your password, trust that they're scam artists trying to get your personal information. Some employees might tape their passwords to the computer monitor or file it away, but the best option is to not write it down at all.

  3. Step 3

Install anti-virus software and firewalls. Some hackers use viruses to obtain your personal information from your computer. A firewall is like a fort that keeps questionable Internet traffic away from your computer. If something does make it onto your computer, anti-virus software can keep it from doing any damage.

  4. Step 4

Examine your security settings on your browser. Today's browsers are designed so you can adjust them to your personal preference. Many browsers are set up for convenience, but that can leave you vulnerable to an attack. Instead, choose the higher security settings to protect yourself.
