How to Use a Pentop Computer

So-called pentop computers have been around for years, used almost exclusively for translating handwriting to data that can be read by your PC. But now, due to the use of flash memory modules and more sophistication, they've become more than your average computerized stenographer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check the requirements for using your computer. It may require special paper or an upgrade to your PC to operate correctly. A few of the requirements may include the need for a USB 2.0 port, more RAM or more hard drive space.
Step2
Install the software that came with your pentop computer on your PC. Do this before connecting the pentop to your computer. Some of the newer pentops may require you to install different programs for it to perform different tasks like mathematical calculations or grammar.
Step3
Take notes on the special paper using the pentop, just as you would using any pen. A light on the pen should blink either red or green. Red means there's a problem and green means that everything's O.K.
Step4
Connect the pentop to the USB port of your computer and download the information from the pen to your PC using the software that came with the pen. Some pens allow you to download the data directly into your program.
Step5
Charge the batteries in your pentop by either using a docking station plugged into a wall outlet or by connecting it to the USB port of your computer. If it's not rechargeable, make sure you change the batteries if performance seems sluggish or translation is unreliable.
