Mounting an overhead microwave will take you about two hours. It comes with instructions explaining how to do the work. If you're comfortable fixing things, you'll probably be able to handle the work yourself. If not, you should get someone to help you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drill
  • Bolts
  • Mounting bracket
  • Duct and vent, if applicable
  1. Step 1

Decide where you'll be mounting the microwave. Use a stud finder or the knocking method to determine if there are two studs in place.

  2. Step 2

Check the packaging for a mounting bracket and instructions. The microwave should come with both.

  3. Step 3

Make a hole in the wall behind where the microwave will be mounted. Snake the electrical cord through this hole and down to where your outlet is. This will hide the ugly cord.

  4. Step 4

Rip out the drywall if there isn't a stud where you need one. Mount a 2-by-4 piece of wood between the current studs to offer support.

  5. Step 5

Use a screwdriver or electric drill to bolt the mounting bracket into the wall. Make sure your screws go through two studs or the wood support you added.

  6. Step 6

Follow the instructions to get the back plate into place. Lift the microwave unit over your head and rest the bottom on the back plate. Roll it into place until it locks.

  7. Step 7

Attach the microwave to the cabinets above to make it flush.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a friend help you. It's easier with two people.
  • If the microwave is on an outside wall, install ducting and a vent.
  • Don't try to do this alone if you can't lift at least 40 lbs. over your head.
