Going to New York City to perform anything in any venue is a head rush. It puts you in the big league and more importantly allows you to realize how very ordinary other actors, performers, and so-called stars of television and stage really are!
The Manhattan Monologue Slam is an event which occurs the first Friday of each month at the New York Film Academy in Manhattan.
Be prepared to watch, participate and sit in the audience with people who act, cast, produce and create stars. Be prepared to become a working actor.
There is also a Los Angeles Monologue Slam! And a slam between the east coast an west coast between the east and west coast champions!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A slamming 30 second monologue
  • A definite POV (point of view)
  • Focus
  • Be the character, the person, and you all at the same time...on stage.
  • Get the the venue.
  1. Step 1

Go to The New York Film Academy on the first Friday of each month at 100 E 17th Street, between Park Ave South and Irving Place.
(The Slam used to be held at the Bowery Poetry Club in the Bowery!)

  2. Step 2

Have a monologue that you have practiced, made yours, is totally awesome, is totally YOU! Bring EVERYTHING to your character and your performance.

  3. Step 3

Sign up for the Second Set which is the audience 30 second slam. Sign up usually occurs after the First Set of 8 pre-booked slammers from the previous slam of the month before.
You have 30 seconds (and believe me it can be a long 30 seconds) to bring everything you have to your character, your person, and your distinct monologue!

  4. Step 4

When you win the 30 second audience slam, you will come back and perform in the FIRST SET with seven other pre-booked slammers vying for the prize, the dream, and the awe and wonder of the audience.
BTW, the judges are people like Andy Dick, casting directors, producers, actors, and famous people just hanging out in the audience!

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring everything to the stage when you are on! Everything meaning, POV, attitude, you are the character, you are the situation. Bring the audience IMMEDIATELY into YOUR world!
  • Just Do It!
  • Take note of how the other slammers immediately get into character, into persona and create the mood, attitude and feeling for their slam.
  • This is an incredible learning experience!
  • Take Meisner Acting classes
