Progressive lenses require training your brain, aka adaptation, to a different vision concept. For the lucky few, they adapt almost instantaneously. But for most people it may take a few days and even up to a month. The adaptation process takes place in the brain.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Progressive addition lens glasses
  • Patience and motivation

Step1
Put your new progressive lens glasses on and leave them on.
Step2
Do not go back and forth between your old and new glasses. Wear the new progressive lens glasses full time to allow your brain ample opportunity to adapt.
Step3
During the adaptation process, remember to point your nose to the object you want to look at. If you move your eyes only without moving your head, you will look through the distorted portion of the lens and vision will be blurry. Remember that the clear vision is along the vertical corridor in the middle of the lens. Pointing your nose to the object will keep your eyes in the clear vision corridor. After a short while, the conscientious effort to point your nose to the target will become automatic.
Step4
Do not despair if you do not adapt after a few days. It may take up to a month.
Step5
If you do not adapt after a month then you have a few options. You can take your glasses back the vision clinic where you got them and ask them to change the progressive lens to a lined bifocal. Or change the progressive lens to a single vision lens and get a second pair of single vision glasses (one pair to see distance and one pair to see near). Most vision clinics will make ONE lens change for you for no additional fee. But be sure you attempt to adapt for a full month and make a good effort to try to adapt first.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once you have adapted to your progressives, be sure to visit your vision clinic's optical for frame tune ups every 3 months. With progressive lenses, it is important that they are centered to your eyes to work properly. With regular glasses wear, the frames can get out of alignment and decenter the lens to your eyes.
