When designing a garden shed, it is important to consider what its main function will be. Below are steps for designing a traditional potting shed.

1. Select a location for your shed that is near the garden. The ideal spot should be level and dry. Look for a place that isn't in total shade, since you will want some natural light inside the garden shed.
2. Decide what type of foundation will work best for your garden shed. A concrete pad will keep the shed dry, but if you ever want to move it, wooden piers or concrete blocks may be a better choice.
3. Select a roof style and siding that compliment your house. If you have gambrel style roof, then design the same style on your garden shed.
4. Include at least one or two windows for sufficient natural light. Make sure the windows have screens to keep bugs at bay.
5. Add plenty of shelves for storing hand tools, pots and plant food. Metal bins are also handy to store seed packets and other small gardening items.
6. Include a long counter just above waist height to make potting plants comfortable.
7. Add a tall cupboard for a place to store rakes, shovels and other large garden equipment.
