How to Take a Walking Tour of Innsbruck

Innsbruck, in the heart of Austria, is known for its Old World charm and its winter sports. However, the town offers more than just architecture and skiing. Take a walk in the city center to learn more about the Tyrol's capital city.

1. Gaze at the Golden Roof. Innsbruck's city center is filled with buildings that date back to medieval times. None of these is more striking the landmark Golden Roof, a 3-story townhouse with balconies, designed by Emperor Maximilian I as a place to view the town festivals and tournaments. The building takes its name from the 2738 gold-plated copper tiles on its roof.

2. Explore the Maximilianeum. The building adorned by the Golden Roof now houses a museum, dedicated to the reign of Maximilian I. Featured are paintings by the Emperor's court painters, including Durer and artifacts from 15th century Austria.

3. Window shop in the Pedestrian District. From the Golden Roof, take a stroll down the pedestrian street that leads directly from the Golden Roof. Here you'll find an assortment of foodstuffs, golden tiles, holiday decorations, Schnapps and other products of Austria's Tyrolean region.

4. Visit the Johanneskirche. Johanneskirche (or St. James Cathedral) is just two blocks from the shopping district. The Gothic church, built in the early 18th century, is noted for its elaborate Baroque interior and the monument to Archduke Maximilian III.

5. Marvel at the Hofburg. This Imperial palace, built in the 15th century and embellished with Baroque details in the 18th century by Maria Theresa, has two domed towers, state rooms, private apartments and a chapel. A visit here gives a wonderful glimpse at Austria Imperial tastes and history.
