How to Choose a Pants Pattern

For many people, constructing a pair of pants can be a daunting task. Although they are easy to sew, getting them to fit properly is the difficult part. One of the first steps to sewing a pair of pants is choosing the right pattern. Follow these steps to find out how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Choose a pattern based on your hip measurements. Unlike pants from a retail clothing store which are bought according to the measurements of your waist, pants that are made from a pattern should be sewn according to your hip measurements to achieve a proper fit.
Step2
Stand in front of a mirror to determine what sort of body shape you have. You will then be able to determine in what area of the pants to make adjustments. Be sure to add or subtract the inches from the pattern while you are at the store so you can be sure to purchase the right amount of fabric.
Step3
Consider how you will have to adjust the pattern in order to achieve the perfect fit. It's unlikely that you will be able to tailor a pair of pants by simply adding or subtracting inches, so you'll need to purchase a pattern that will allow you to deviate from the original design while still providing a flattering fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always take waist, hip, thigh and leg measurements before choosing a pattern.
  • Plan to make small or big alterations in many areas, such as the front, back and sides, instead of in just one place.
