How to Make Homemade Hamster Treats

Hamsters have special dietary requirements and food made specifically for hamsters is commercially available. Commercial hamster food is usually high in protein but it may have all of the amino acids than a hamster needs for protein synthesis. You can easily make your own hamster food with a little effort and care. The following steps will show how to make homemade hamster treats.

1. Provide your hamster commercial hamster food or fresh fruits and vegetables as the bulk of their diet. They are an excellent source vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. In addition, they provide roughage and fiber. Discarded green vegetables often can be obtained for free from your grocer.
2. Use most grains as a dietary supplement. Barley, corn, soybeans and wheat are good choices but you shouldn't give a hamster oats as the sharp ends tend to scratch their cheek pouches.
3. Feed your hamster sunflower seeds as one of their favorite treats. However, they should not be a significant part of a hamster's diet because the oil will be fattening for them. Lactating females should be given more to enhance milk production, but this extra amount should be removed from their diet once the pups are weaned.
4. Give adult hamsters most types of bird seed, especially rape and millet as another excellent treat. These seeds also make a good solid food for babies. Mix different types of seeds together for a special homemade treat.
5. Let your hamsters chew on small hard dog biscuits occasionally. They are high in calcium and phosphorus and provide a good tooth-grinding medium.
