How to Use Pencil Erasers Around the House

Until 1770, breadcrumbs were used to removed pencil marks from paper. Scientist Joseph Priestly then noted that "india rubber" was much more effective, but it wasn't until 1858 that an eraser was actually attached to a pencil. The abrasive quality of the rubber lifts the graphite from the paper, making it "disappear." This and the other qualities of rubber erasers make them handy to have around the house.

Instructions

    • 1

Erase crayon marks from painted walls. Try erasing fingerprints, too. Use a large eraser and watch the scuff marks disappear from vinyl floors.

    • 2

Make a hand pin cushion. Use a large, flat eraser to hold stray needles and straight pins. Keep a large eraser on the workbench to store small drill bits.

    • 3

Clean piano keys on any kind of keyboard. Use a flat eraser to remove finger oils and dust from ivory or plastic keys.

    • 4

Stabilize large mirrors and picture frames. Glue slices of pencil erasers to the bottom corners at the back of the frame to keep it straight.

    • 5

Remove stick-on label residue from glass surfaces. Use a pencil eraser and peel the adhesive away.

    • 6

Shine old coins. Clean up a grimy coin collection and restore luster by rubbing a pencil eraser over the surface of each coin.

    • 7

Replace an earring back. Use a pair of scissors to slice about 1/8 inch of an eraser from the top of a pencil, then slide it over the earring post to secure it until the back can be replaced.
