1
Figure out how many stitches you should cast on. You can do this by multiplying the number of layette repeats across by four. For example, if you want to have 10 layettes along the width of your piece, you will need to cast on 40 stitches.
-
2
Complete row 1 by repeating this pattern to the end: knit two stitches; purl two stitches.
-
-
3
Work row 2 using the yarn over technique. This will increase the number of stitches you have per row. Repeat this pattern across row 2: knit two stitches; purl one stitch; yarn over once; purl one stitch.
-
4
Complete row 3 by knitting three stitches and purling two stitches. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row.
-
5
Work row 4 by knitting two stitches and purling three stitches. Repeat this pattern across the row.
-
6
Reduce the number of stitches across as you knit row 5 by knitting two stitches together. This will remove the extra stitches you added to your piece in Step 3. Knit one stitch, knit two stitches together, and purl two stitches. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row.
-
7
Work row 6 in the following pattern: knit one stitch; wrap the yarn over once; knit one stitch; purl two stitches. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row.
-
8
Complete row 7 by knitting two stitches and then purling three stitches. Repeat this pattern all the way across.
-
9
Work row 8 by knitting three stitches and then purling two stitches. Repeat this pattern all the way across the row.
-
10
Finish one layette pattern by completing row 9. For this row, knit two stitches, purl one stitch, and then purl two stitches together. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row.
-
11
Make your knitted piece longer by repeating Steps 2 through 10 until you have gotten your desired length.

Tips & Warnings
To do the yarn over technique, simply wrap the yarn over your needle once. Then continue knitting as usual.
To knit two stitches together, you will put your right hand needle through the second stitch and then first stitch from the right of your left hand needle. Then pull your yarn through both stitches at the same time.
To purl two stitches together, put your right hand needle straight through the first and then the second stitch on your left hand needle. Purl the yarn through both stitches at the same time.
