1
Figure out how many stitches you should cast on. Do this by multiplying the number of horizontal repeats by 4 and, to that number, add 1. For example, if you want to have 5 thermal stitches per row, multiply 5 by 4 and add 1. You would cast on 21 stitches.

2
Begin knitting the first row. Knit two stitches, purl one stitch and knit one stitch. Repeat this pattern until you have one stitch left in the row. Knit that last stitch.

3
Start the second row. Purl one stitch. Then start the pattern for row two: knit two stitches, and then purl two stitches. Repeat this pattern to the end of the row.
-
4
Work the third row in the following pattern: knit one stitch; purl two stitches; and knit one stitch. Repeat this pattern until you have one stitch left in the row. Knit the last stitch.
-
5
Purl the first stitch of the fourth row. Then finish you thermal stitches by repeating this pattern to the end of the row: purl one stitch; knit two stitches; purl one stitch.
-
6
Make your knitted piece longer by adding more rows of completed thermal underwear stitches. Do this by repeating Steps 2 through 5. When your piece is the right length, bind off.
