Instructions

    • 1

Pick the right occasion to wear your cravat. Formal events such as balls or weddings are the ideal time to try a cravat. Wear these with a suit and shirt with a wide, stiff collar.

    • 2

Color match your cravat to other accessories or outfits. At weddings, the groomsmen's cravats can coordinate with bridesmaids' dresses or the color theme of the wedding. Many formal wear stores will color match for you if you bring in a fabric sample of the color you need.

    • 3

Decide on which style best suits your outfit. There are various different ways to tie a cravat from the less formal "scrunch" or "ruche tie" to the very formal tie-like style that is complimented by a cravat pin. Consider the occasion to make your choice and ensure that if several people have the same outfit, these are all tied in the same way.

    • 4

Tie your cravat by draping the material around your neck and crossing the long end over the short. Take the longer end back underneath and pass through the loop again. Fold down the longer end over the knot and depending on which style you have chosen, pass over again or fold down and fasten with a pin.

    • 5

Secure your cravat by adding a cravat pin to the finished ensemble. You can find a wide range of styles of cravat pins (see resources), and many are available in sets with matching cuff links.

Tips & Warnings
