How to Prevent Sunburn at Topless Beaches

Sunburn can be painful and itchy, and it ruins a perfect tan. The areas that aren't exposed to sun on a regular basis are more prone to burn than other areas. Preventing sunburn at a topless beach keeps you from hurting and reduces your risk for skin cancer.

Know your skin type. People with fair skin almost always get a sunburn instead of a tan. Fair skin generally means you have white skin, blonde or red hair, blue or green eyes and freckles. Dark-skinned people can be in the sun for longer periods of time without getting sunburned.

Limit the time you spend in the sun. Start by going topless for ten to fifteen minutes a day. You can increase the amount of time by five minutes a day as your skin tans and adjusts to heat. Watch for signs of sunburn and reduce your exposure time if you think you might be starting to burn instead of tan.

Go to the beach at times when the sun isn't as intense. You can be topless longer and prevent sunburn by going to the beach before 10 am and after 4 pm.

Wear sunscreen. You can choose a low SPF that allows you to tan while you're topless. Generally, the lighter your skin, the higher SPF you need. You can apply a fake tan with lotion or airbrush and put the sunscreen over it. If you plan on swimming, use a waterproof sunscreen.

Find or take shade. You can use a large umbrella to protect you from the sun without having to put your top back on. Some topless beaches have covered cabanas that are open toward the beach. You could also use a large hat, which is less cumbersome than an umbrella, to help protect you from the sun.
