How to Get a Business Referral

If you aren't getting the referrals you desire, chances are you are not asking for the referral, you aren't providing the best service possible, your clients do not think of you or they do not understand what you do well enough to refer you. To get more business referrals, follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Exceeding your customer's expectations on a regular basis and just doing good work for them will get you a business referral. People will recommend you to others if they know you will take care of them and treat them right.

    • 2

Ask your happy customers if they know of anyone who would be in need of your services. Some clients will be happy to give you names and numbers of people or companies they think of. A referral in this way is a good opportunity to open doors you would not have been able to otherwise.

    • 3

Give your satisfied clients two business cards to carry in their wallets or day-planners. That way if they come across anyone who would be in need of you, they will pass your card along.

    • 4

Communicate with your clients so that they know all the facets of services your company provides. This knowledge will allow your clients to better refer you to others that are in need of these services. If they don't know all you do, they can't refer you in these situations.

    • 5

Offer a small gift for referrals if you feel comfortable in doing so. Make the gift non-monetary and reasonably priced so that it is not misconstrued as a bribe.

    • 6

Give customers that have a lot of connections extra special treatment. Build friendships with these clients and referrals are bound to result.

    • 7

Get involved in organizations that cater to those you wish to do business with. Be an expert in your field, teach classes for these organizations and buy ads and listings in their magazines and directories. People in these organizations will immediately think of you when others verbalize the need for the product or service you provide.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always send thank you cards to someone who has given you a referral when you have received business from it.

  • Ask for a referral after the customer's needs have been met, you have earned their trust and you know they are happy with you. If you ask too soon, you will lose the opportunity.
