A bed rail is used to make a bed safe for the elderly or ill. A bed rail can be used to get out of bed without the assistance of another person. To prevent injury, you'll want to make sure that the bed rail is installed properly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the instructions that came with the bed rail. Many models, like the Bed Bar, have three sets of instructions for installation on a wooden frame, metal frame or hospital bed.

  2. Step 2

Assemble the bed rail if needed. The bed rail may come in pieces that need to be put together. You may need to screw in each rail to the base of the bed rail.

  3. Step 3

Place the bed rail alongside the bed. You'll want to put it in a place that makes it easy for you to reach once installed. If the height on the model is adjustable, set it to suit your height.

  4. Step 4

Put the shim over the side rail of the bed. Check to make sure it is secure before you continue. You can tighten the shim on many models to ensure that it has an immovable fit.

  5. Step 5

Secure the bed rail to the headboard of the bed. To do this, you'll need to screw the side piece of the bed rail to the headboard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some simpler bed rail models can be installed by sliding the locking arms between the mattress and box spring of the bed.
  • After you install the bed rail, you'll want to test it to make sure it is secure and within reach. Make adjustments as needed.
