How to Wait in Line

Everyone hates waiting in lines. Long lines can have you standing in place for 20 or 30 minutes or more, and you become more and more frustrated as the line slowly inches forward. Since waiting in lines is practically unavoidable, here are some strategies to make the wait more bearable.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Bring a handheld game along. An easy-to-access game can distract you during your wait time. Sudoku puzzles and crosswords all come in small electronic versions. Mute the sound while you are playing in order to avoid annoying other customers.
Step2
Look over the menu. If you are waiting in line at a food concession stand or restaurant, spend the time looking over their menu. This can also cut down on the time that it will take you to order.
Step3
Watch TV. More and more businesses are installing television sets around the checkout areas. This can keep a person distracted while waiting to get to the front of the line.
Step4
Browse through a magazine. Supermarkets typically leave their magazine selections right by the checkout line. Feel free to look them over while waiting.
Step5
Fill out your check or application in line. If you have any type of paperwork to fill out, do it while you are waiting in line instead of ahead of time.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a small child, remember to bring several distractions to keep him occupied while waiting in line. Pack your purse with a book or toys for him to play with.
  • You can cut down on waiting in long lines by changing the times that you shop. Early morning hours and the hours right before a store closes usually attracts fewer customers.
