How to Color a Text Box in PowerPoint

When you insert a text box into a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, it will automatically have a transparent background. This is so if you add it to a blank slide or a slide that already has a background, you can still see what is behind the text box. If you would like to change the color of the text box, follow the directions below.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2003

Step1
Start Microsoft PowerPoint. Open a file that you have already created that contains a text box to which you would like to add some color.
Step2
Use your mouse to click on the border of the text box to select it. You can tell it's selected when you see a thick gray border surrounding the text box.
Step3
Right-click on the text box and select "Format Text Box" to open the "Format Text Box" dialog box.
Step4
Click on the drop-down menu for "Color" under the "Fill" section of the "Format Text Box" dialog box to select the color that you would like to apply to your selected text box.
Step5
Set a transparency for your text box by using your mouse to move the "Transparency" slider or using your keyboard to key in a percentage of transparency to the right of the slider.
Step6
Click the "OK" button to close the "Format Text Box" dialog box and fill your text box with the color that you have specified.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can insert a text box into PowerPoint by choosing the "Insert" menu and clicking on "Text Box." Use your mouse to click and drag to form your text box.
  • You can also use the drawing toolbar to insert a text box and change the color of it.
  • Adjusting the transparency of the color of the text box will make sure that your audience can easily read the text you have in the text box.
